The art of Harry's Game

To support the books a number of talented artists from around the world have been commissioned to paint, draw, or sketch scenes and characters from the series.

In addition to the commissioned art, I've drawn a few pieces myself.

Of Bravery in Summer Skies.

By Conway Rowland

Of Bravery in Summer Skies

Conway Rowland is a talented aviation and landscape artist based in Wales, with a skill for painting scenes from the Second World War in a timeless style that you'd see in the best fine art galleries in the world. When I commissioned Conway, he suggested a scene from the second book in the Harry's Game series: Hell's Corner, which takes place during the Battle of Britain. The painting sees Harriet Cornwall with 508 Squadron Auxiliary Air Force at the height of the battle, with casualties mounting, and the safety of the country hanging by a thread.

Shadows and Dust.

By Franz Zumstein

Malta Story

Franz Zumstein is one of the world's leading grapic novel artists specialising in World War Two, and when I saw some of his work in the Desert Falcon, a graphic novel set in the wartime Mediterranean, I commissioned him to draw a scene from the fifth book in the Harry's Game series: Blue Skies & Tailwinds.

The piece shows Harriet with her photographic reconnaissance Spitfire at Takali airfield in Malta 1942, below the walls of Mdina, the silent city.

Sleeping
Giants.

By Kyoko Yoshida

Sleeping Giants

Kyoko Yoshida is a Japanese artist who specialises in equine art, and some years ago I commissioned her to paint a scene inspired by the second book in the Harry's Game series: Sleeping Giants.

The piece depicts Harriet as a female samurai, leading her warroirs into battle as the sun risis through the mist. I talked with Kyoko through the commissioning process, and she told me of the real life female samuaris in Japanese history. Kyoko's art shimmers in the lifht when the sun's on it due to a technique she uses layering her paint.

The Jug

I drew this to support a 2024 event that is run to raise funds to maintain USAAC war graves in the UK, as well as keeping the stories of WW2 Allied pilots alivein the Midlands.

Faith

I drew this image of 'Faith', one of the few Gloster GladiatorBiplanes that defended Malta for a while in 1940, to support the Malta Aviation Museum.

Carrie

I drew this image of Carrie Stone, a character that became very important to Harriet as the war raged on.

Lexi

I drew this to support a 2023 event that is run to raise funds to maintain USAAC war graves in the UK, as well as keeping the stories of WW2 Allied pilots alivein the Midlands.

Inspired

This piece was drawn by Spanish artist Ismael Gonzales. It sees Harriet in cartoon form, looking up to the skies during the Battle of Britain.

The inspiration for the piece was a famous photo taken of IrIshman Group Captain John 'Paddy' Hemingway, who as a young man trained here in East Yorkshire, before going on to serve in the Battle of France and Battle of Britain, followed by time in Italy and taking part in the battle over Normandy in 1944.

John Hemingway is, in February 2025, recognised as the last surviving British pilot who flew in the Battle of Britain
